We all skipped as children. When did we stop? Why did we stop?
We need to lighten up.
Literally, of course – two-thirds of us are overweight. But mentally and emotionally, in daily life, we need to lighten up. There’s more to life than the non-stop busyness and stress of modern society. Too much drama, not enough comedy.
I ran across a quote: “Skipping exercises your happiness muscles.” ~ Jessi Lane Adams
That quote got stuck in my head, and I was overwhelmed by the desire to run outside and skip down the street. So I did. Then I kept going, and skipped along my hiking trail. I discovered that it is impossible to skip and not smile. There was a huge grin plastered on my face. I felt light, joyful, exuberant. Arms swinging akimbo, knees lifting high, I realized that I was giggling to myself.
We all skipped as children. When did we stop? Why did we stop? Must we be so busy, so serious?
I have decided that I am going to skip about regularly from now on. I may even do a little twirling.
Oh, and by the way – skipping is also an incredible workout! You can burn twice as many calories skipping as walking, and it doesn’t put impact on the knees and ankles like running does. While running emphasizes a downward motion, skipping is an upward motion. It defies gravity, lifting your body and your mood at the same time.
So forget about having to “act like a grownup” all the time, or what the neighbors might think, just get out there and start skipping!
