The next chapter on from Night’s Run.
Vexx’s steady steps along the halls were eerie because of the silence and stares from the rest of the pack. He came walking through the underground doors with an unconscious Kailon in his arms, though from a distance she probably looked dead. Everybody parted for him, all staring in amazement that someone could do this to Kailon. Even Vexx wondered why Kailon gave up at one point during the battle with the Moon Gun, she never gives up for any reason.
Cassandra was standing at the end of the main hall, Dark by her side, both were staring in awe. As Vexx continued to walk he could hear some of the pack whispering things like ‘traitor’ or other things that he couldn’t quite work out. It angered him that they could think he was responsible for this but once they hear the true story… they won’t be thinking that again.
He heard Kailon’s breath start to race, looking down he could she her birthmark starting to glow faintly. Dark took her from Vexx’s arms and took her into the medical bay; even werewolves get sick from time to time. Her breathing was still racing, that mark was still glowing but getting brighter. Cassandra was following behind with Vexx at her heels; he was explaining the whole incident including the Moon Gun prototype in the Rangers’ possession.
Turning into the medical bay, Dark put Kailon down and could see her bullet wound starting to heal. They all knew why she was healing, her vampirisim was starting to kick in. Cassandra turned on her heels and left in a hurry after seeing Kailon start to heal, Dark turned and looked stunned that Cassandra wanted to leave. As she returned she was holding blood packs, Dark nodded after figuring it out.
“Get away from her Dark,” Cassandra’s voice held concern for the future alpha male, Dark backed away from Kailon as she walked forward.
Vexx looked at Dark and spoke, “I need you to find out if any of the Moon Guns are gone.”
“Why?” Dark questioned, his eyes locked on Cassandra as she was trying to wake Kailon.
“Because Kailon was attacked by a Moon Gun,” Cassandra and Dark both turned and looked at him, “She wasn’t caught in the beam so don’t worry about that.”
Cassandra turned back, “That’s a good thing, remember the first time we were testing the Moon Guns, she volunteered and well the next day was a full moon. We had no idea what would happen to her.”
“It wasn’t your fault,” Dark spoke up, “Is she going to be alright though?”
“She will be when she wakes up and gets some of this blood in her system,” She replied without even looking over her shoulder to see who Dark was talking to.
Dark was still looking at Vexx, “I’ll go ask the Russian wolves if they’ve lost one Moon Gun, what if they haven’t?”
“Then we have a leak in the Russian wolves, Cassandra will have to scan them.”
“For starters I don’t scan I look, and secondly I’m not an object to be used whenever you want Vexx I do need time to rest.”
“Uh huh, don’t worry Cass… you can do it when Mistress orders you to,” Dark joked, getting a scowl from Cassandra as she looked over her shoulder at him.
Vexx stepped between them both when they heard Kailon gasp, she sat up quickly and looked at the blood pack in her hand, “Why thanks Cassandra, I was hungry,” Tearing at the packet Cassandra left the other three packets there for her to tear at and drink.
“Nice to see sleeping beauty awake,” Vexx said, Kailon turned her head slightly and growled causing him to jump slightly, “I was kidding, really I was.”
“Mistress what exactly happened? Vexx didn’t really fill me in because he was hiding most of the time,” Cassandra said as Kailon finished the last of the blood packs, she really did drink them fast.
“Some new werewolf had a Moon Gun, she was trying to hit me with the beam so she could get a cure. Guys we need to know how they got a Moon Gun, I know the Russian wolves went hunting at least three months ago,” Cassandra turns away and Kailon jumps off the bench she’s on and taps Cassandra’s shoulder, “What did you do?”
“It wasn’t my fault, remember when I went missing for about three weeks?”
“Oh yeah, I found you inside the Rangers’ headquarters. What happened, you wouldn’t even know how to re-make one,” Kailon was talking pretty fast but they still could understand her, just barely though.
Cassandra turned back, her eyes locking with Kailon’s, “I was used in genetic experiments, they know how to look into the minds of werewolves and others. They might have looked into the minds of the Russian wolves and… seen how to make one as well as your weakness.”
Without even breaking Cassandra’s gaze Kailon spoke towards Vexx, “Go and get the Russian wolves and bring them in here, I need to speak to them,” Vexx nodded and left, “Cass, that definitely wasn’t your fault, you couldn’t have known what they would try to do with you.”
“I could’ve fought it but I didn’t,” Kailon snickered at her, “What’s so funny?”
“Just you think of yourself as weak and look at you, I treat you with more respect than I treat anyone else. You’re not weak and you still blame yourself for what has happened to me but don’t because I don’t blame you.”
Dark spoke up, deciding to get into the conversation in some way, “You blame the vampires for biting you.”
“That’s correct, Cassandra if you want to blame yourself for anything its being unnaturally kind towards everyone except vampires and Rangers.”
Cassandra smiled slightly and brought Kailon into a tight hug, ripping the air out of her. Kailon’s arms trying to push the larger werewolf away but to no prevail, she always fought to keep a hug going. Vexx came back in with five more werewolves following all of them females, Cassandra dropped Kailon and allowed her to catch her breath.
“Ok, Cass, find out which one has been in contact with the Rangers,” Cassandra nodded and started over to one of them, even Kailon noticed the slight movement from the smallest one, “You, the one who is shortest. Come here.”
The smaller one walked out and over to Kailon, her long hair was over her eyes and she was looking uneasy, “Mistress?” Her Russian accent was not extremely thick but it was still able to be heard easily.
“You were one of the ones that were in the hunting party not long ago.”
“Da, I was”
“Cass, look into her mind and see if she was the one who the Rangers found,” Kailon backed away as Cassandra took the smallest one’s head into her hands and looked into her mind.
“Sorry if I’m hurting you, it’s hard to discern the right amount of neural transmitters I need to activate in your head compared to a Ranger’s… interesting, you were found by the Rangers but I see that you are a little fighter aren’t you?”
“Da, I would never let those yebat’ glav take me and do what they did to you.”
“Language, I can see into your mind I know what you were thinking. I can also detect a fake memory when I see one, the Rangers were crafty with you.”
Kailon put a hand on her friend’s back, “Can you get to the real memory?”
“Not without damaging her, I don’t want to do this to one of the Russian wolves.”
“Fake memory? I killed them,” The Russian said, she was sounding scared.
“No you didn’t they planted the fake memory by using what they took from me. That’s something I’ve done to Rangers before, I’m sorry but you were the one who had the information that the Rangers took.” Cassandra replied as she broke away from the Russian.
“How could they?”
“The Rangers wouldn’t hesitate to use anyone to their advantage that includes that new werewolf. I feel sorry for her,” Kailon’s voice was neutral again and her eyes were blank, Vexx tapped her back and she turned quickly to face him her eyes flashing again.
“How the hell do you do that?” Vexx said brushing the hair out of her face.
“Make my eyes flash? I have no idea its kinda like those who can pop their shoulders out of their sockets but they can’t really explain how they do it.”
Cassandra chuckled, “Too bad if only we knew how you did that then maybe we could change our pack name to the Flashing Eyes Pack.”
“That’s not the best name, what’s wrong with The Dark Aura pack?” Dark said finally, Cassandra tilted her head slightly as if to be considering it, “Russians, we thank you for your co-operation on this matter.”
All of the Russians bowed their heads and left, Kailon was still looking at Vexx. Her smirk started to form at the corners of her lips, Cassandra playfully slapped Kailon’s back to say don’t even think about it. Each of them were now completely aware that the Rangers knew about the Moon Gun and then most likely about their plan. Changes would have to be made, no-one wants to be the one responsible for the genocide of an entire race and with that resting on Kailon’s shoulders… she would definitely find a way around that.
