About the Statue of Liberty.

Lady Liberty isn’t green with envy; she’s just had her fair share of acid. Get it, acid, like the drug? Yeah I know that sounded like one of Michael Scott’s offensive jokes from The Office but seriously speaking, this colossal statue that stands a mighty 152 ft. high was never meant to be green. Years of rain fall have caused this structure to turn to a new color. From its original copper hue, it changed to green from acid in the rain. By the way, acidic rain has the property to accelerate the decay of buildings, paints, sculptures and guess what, statues. Personally I think the color transformation suits what the statue stands for which is freedom and enlightenment. Located on a 12 acre island called Liberty Island, this gift of friendship from France has been the universal symbol for freedom and democracy. Sculpted by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, he has the original patent of this icon.

Symbolically speaking, the design for the statue of Liberty can be traced to the Greek goddess Libertas who fought against slavery, oppression and tyranny. The seven spikes stand for the 7 seas and 7 continents while the torch, enlightenment. The tablet represents knowledge and inscribed on it are July IV, MDCCLXXV, the date of the United States Declaration of Independence. An icon of sorts, this statue also has appeared in many notable movies (Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, etc). Very effective in fact because to convey a sense of downfall to people, especially Americans, have their symbol of independence fall to the ground. One of the most visited tourist sites in America, Statue de la Liberté (it’s french name) has proven to be one of the greatest man made structures in the world. A designated National Monument, Lady Liberty is over a hundred years old. Not too shabby for an old gal huh.
