What if we could live forever? What if we would never die? What if this. What if that. They’re only “What if’s”.
Isn’t it the most common of wishes to live for all eternity? To never die, nor be subjected to confinement in a coffin, or a jar as a handful of dust? If you were given a shot of immortality, would it really be that great? You might be like Dexter and take it, or you might just be impossible like Clara. Let’s take a look at their take on the topic.
So, what’s your take on immortality?
Dexter: Ofcourse. I’m not stupid. I’d be alive forever. I could do anything I’ve ever wanted and try all the things I’d never have the chance doing because of the pressure of time. Instead of constantly worrying about how I’m not going to be here someday, I could just realx and live my life the way I want to.
Clara: Well, why can’t you live your life the way you want to now? Just knowing that you’re going to die should make you want to live life to the fullest every single day. If you know you’re never going to die, you’d be too relaxed and life would end up getting boring ’cause you’d put everything off, considering how your time’s never going to end.
D: Well, I can’t do what I want because I know I have to try to live before I take the dirt nap. So I work all hours to get me some money for food, the rent, my personal stuff, and some occassional booze…
C: If you ask me, you’re not even living. You sound like a zombie in a never-ending cycle of wake-up, work, eat, sleep, repeat.
D: It’s not like I have any other choice. You need money to live and you need to work to get money.
C: Oh, I get that. It’s just that you aren’t LIVING. Have you even gone on a vacation? Pursued a hobby? Studied something you love? Go on an adventure? Or are you just too busy working?
D: I have to work…
C: Well what are you working for?
D: A good future…
C: Oh, and what is that? A big house, a nice car, an out-of-a-storybook family? What do you do after that? Will you be able to say that you lived your life doing everything you’ve ever wanted? Or would you say that you lived only to gain all the material possessions that you would lose in the end?
D: So what am I suppose to do? Stop working?
C: No. Stop repeating your cycle of trying so hard to gain something you know you’d end up losing. Why don’t you try actually living. You know. Do what you want sometimes. Play a sport, take up a hobby, get in touch with nature, and just do what you want to do. It’s alright to worry about the future but don’t stop living just because of that. Because if you do, you’ll only be bombarded with “what if’s” and wishful thinking. Then we’ll have this conversation all over again.
D: Huh, and everyone knows we wouldn’t want that.
So what do you think? Are you living your life the way you think you should? The way everyone expects you to? The way my parents have brainwashed me to do? I can hear their voices now, “College, Job, Family. That’s the goal.” It’s ultimately up to you with what you’re going to do with your life. If you can, just try to be careful around the “What if” pitt stops.
