My hairdresser reminisced about her good old days at studio 54.
Had my hair colored today. Sharon was in pain. She complained to me about it for twenty minutes. I could see she was in anguish. I tried to bring up a topic that she might be interested in to change the subject. It was the brief reopening of Studio 54. Almost immediately her eyes began to twinkle and her lips turned up into a smile. She looked twenty years younger. “Those were the best days” she reminisced.
There were lines to get into studio 54 with hundreds of people of all shapes and sizes. Sharon proudly admitted that the bouncer always let her in without waiting. She is tall, thin and attractive, then she was most definitely a knockout. She told me that they took in very sophisticated types, oddly assembled freaky types and a host of celebrity regulars. Every once in a while a few tourists were able to bribe their way in. One day a woman with long hair came riding up on a white horse, like Lady Godiva, totally naked. The bouncer told her the horse could stay.
She loved the music, She danced on the same floor with Grace Jones, Calvin Klein and the Young Rascals. The Beatles, and even Elvis spent time performing and partying whenever they wanted. Sharon said she never drank, smoked or did drugs. She was high on the atmosphere, the music and probably the fumes, Many people needed the help of cannabis or other drugs to get them going. There was a lounge on the third floor with huge black couches. She said that they looked like the finest leather. It actuality, they were made of rubber and were hosed off every night. That gave me food for thought.
Sharon talked about Steve Rubell. Her stories inspired me to get his biography. She can write a book herself with all that first hand experience. “It was an adventure”, she boasted. The back pain was gone.
