Nursing homes are lonely places. Many residents have no family or living children, and some never have a visitor. There are things we can do to make our elders lives healthier and happier. A happier person enjoys better health. Studies show that people live longer and happier when they have a strong support system. These are the people who taught us to be responsible citizens. They are our parents, grandparents and friends. Let us show them our appreciation.

Be A Nursing Home Visitor

50 percent of nursing home residents have no close relatives. 46 percent have no living children. An estimated 60 percent of nursing home residents have no visitors. Many residents never leave the premises. A large number, even those with families spend weekends and holidays alone without visitors. Most of us who are able to lead a normal life, often forget others are not so lucky. With few social contacts, depression, disability, loneliness, and death of close friends, it take a huge toll on the emotional, and mental health of these individuals.

As weird as it seems, organizations that support seniors often receive the least support. This could be because when we speak about the elderly the focus is on costly medical bills. While health care is certainly an issue, there are things that can be done to help the elderly live happier more fulfilled lives that can eliminate larger needs. Just a visit with a nursing home resident can lift their spirits. A happier person who is interested in visiting with family and friends is a healthier person.

Contributions to an elderly persons pleasure doesn’t need to be costly. Just a friendly visit, a book in large print, a box of candy, or a deck of playing cards in large print can mean more than you can imagine to a lonely nursing home resident. Look for ways to volunteer. Do you have a half a day a month you can spare to a nursing home? You might chat with those who have no visitors, read to those who are unable to read, or play a game of cards with a lonley resident. There is so much need. We can at least give the gift of time to make someones life a little brighter.

Great post. In my place, people can do volunteer works and pay visit to the nursing homes. Often some special performances, such as singing and drama, will be offered to cheer the elders. Thanks for sharing.

One thing about Filipinos is the close family ties and our being clannish. We have rare cases of leaving our elders in nursing homes. Old folks live with their children… While there are some who are abandoned, in general we care for our grandparents and parents.

The elderly in nursing homes deserve our respect and support, don’t forget they were the people that made this great country what it is today.
