Taiwanese food and drinks contaminated with Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)

Have you ever imagine drinking a substance for making a PVC pipes? This is such alarming news that started in Taiwan. Since Taiwan officials were making their actions regarding the food scare, prosecutors in the county seized food and beverage manufacturers that were found using DEHP additive in their products.A total of 12 factories, including facilities in Taipei, New Taipei City, Changhua County, Nantou County and Pingtung County were searched yesterday, the prosecutors said.

DEHP: A softener for polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a plastic polymer used in a wide array of products. It is used in PVC since plasticizer (softener) is typically added to increase the flexibility of the polymer. Everyone can be exposed to small levels of DEHP in everyday life. However, some individuals can be exposed to high levels of DEHP through certain medical procedures. The amount of DEHP that will leach out depends on the temperature, the lipid content of the liquid, and the duration of contact with the plastic.

Of greatest concern are the effects on the development of the male reproductive system and the production of normal sperm in young animals.

This is a food scares that most of us is affected, which is why the Taiwanese Authorities were doing their best effort to seized and persecute those behind this irresponsible acts.
