The shocking words “Amy Winehouse is dead” appeared as a text message on my phone on July 23rd, 2011. In the next few hours the same words were all over the news and the internet. As the story of her tortured life and death unfolded, it became apparent that she was the latest member of ‘The 27 club’ or the ‘Forever 27 club’. The members of this club were all talented musicians who died at the young age of 27. The following is a list of just 10 of them.
1. Brian Jones was a founding member and guitarist of the British band the Rolling Stones. He was found dead in his swimming pool on July 3rd 1969. The coroner’s report stated that his death was by ‘misadventure. It was found that his heart and liver were enlarged due to persistent and excessive use of drugs and alcohol.

2. Jimmy Hendricks was a very successful electric guitarist, singer and songwriter. The cause of his death was asphyxiation on his own vomit after consuming a lethal dose of sleeping pills and wine. He died on September 18th 1970.

3. Janis Joplin was an American singer-songwriter and the lead singer for Big Brother and the Holding Company. The exact cause of her death is unclear but it is thought she died of a probable heroin overdose. She died on October 4th, 1970.

4. Jim Morrison was a singer-songwriter, poet, actor and the lead singer of the rock band The Doors. The cause of his death although undetermined (because an autopsy was not carried out), was listed as heart failure. He died on July 3rd, 1971.

5. Ron “Pigpen” McKernan was one of the founding members of the band The Grateful Dead. He was a vocalist, percussionist and played keyboard and harmonica. The cause of his death was attributed to gastrointestinal haemorrhaging attributed to alcohol. He died on March 8th 1973.

6. Gary Thain was a lead bassist in the British band Uriah Heap. He died of a drug overdose on December 8th 1975

7. Richey Edwards was a lyricist for the British band The Manic Street Preachers. On February 1st, 1976 he disappeared. His car was found near the Severn Bridge in England in a spot renowned as a suicide location. His body was never found, and on November 23, 2008 he was officially presumed dead.

8. D. Boon was a singer-songwriter and guitarist for the punk band Minutemen. He died on December 22nd, 1985 in an accident. He had been lying down in the back of a van due to being ill from a fever; he was not wearing a seatbelt. He was ejected from the van when it veered off the road and died instantly from a broken neck.

9. Kurt Cobain was a singer-songwriter and guitarist of the band Nirvana. He suffered from depression and heroin addiction. He died on April 5th 1994. The cause of his death was listed as suicide by a single gunshot to the head.

10. Amy Winehouse died on July 23rd 2011. She was a multi-award winning singer-songwriter. At the time of writing the cause of her death is “as yet unexplained” according to British police. Early indications are that her death may have been due to alcohol withdrawal syndrome.
