This article describes UK’s leading regulator of advertisements; the ASA.
The ASA is the UK’s largest independent regulator of advertising all over the media; this includes T.V, internet sales promotions, posters, Teleshopping and radio adverts. The ASA’s job is to ensure that the adverts follow the Advertising codes which are written by the CAP (Committee of Advertising Practice), the CAP is responsible for Non-Broadcasting adverts in the media such as posters, press and online; and the BCAP (Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice), which is responsible for responsible for writing and maintaining the TV and Radio Advertising Standards Codes; this means that the advert must be honest, decent, and legal and truthful. The ASA was founded in 1962 and ever since then it has been taking action on illegal adverts which do not following the Advertising codes. The ASA acts on complaints from the general public as well as monitoring the media itself. The current Chairman of ASA is Rt Hon Lord Smith of Finsbury, a very successful individual. Last year from January to June 16,190 complaints were received and out of these cases almost 16,000 were resolved.
