Amethyst is a beautiful purple variety of quartz. They have no cleavage and and grow triagonal as most crystals do. In New Age circles, the amethyst is worn to prevent seduction. The darker the stone, the more it’s value in dollars. The name amethyst is Greek and means “not drunken”

They are found in various areas of Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Canada, Uruguay , Africa, and many places in the United States.  They are also found in geodes which are formed in volcanic rock and are usually cut round to enhance their color.

As the color purple has always been associated with power and wealth, amethyst has always been used to adorn monarchs and rulers.
