Hugging is considered to be both a physical and psychological necessity. Its effectiveness has been amply documented as a means of rebuilding hope and restoring confidence, self-assurance and helping those who feel that, in spite of their best efforts, they are still lingering in the doldrums of despair.

The act of hugging a person in certain circumstances, by way of consolation and encouragement, can serve to infuse new hope for those who feel at once dejected, because of constant failure or frustration.  Here is a concrete example of how hugging can benefit a person:  A student was experiencing a reading problem, as a result of which, the other students in class considered him to be stupid and lazy, but one of the teachers, thought of an idea that she felt might work in the boy’s favor:  She knew that, according to her observation, the boy would, sooner or later, start reading without any problem,  if only she could get him to overcome his fear and hesitation.  She decided to do something about it.  She sat down beside him, during the reading period,  warmly put her arms around him and said:  Come on, you can do it, I know you can!”   At this, the boy, suddenly perked up and without any hesitation, began reading with confidence, much to the surprise of the other students in the class.  The forbidden act of touching a student did not prevent her from breaking the rule. The teacher overlooked the taboo and, at the spur of the moment, did what she considered to be an effective approach, in this instance, proving, beyond any doubt, that hugging a child can, indeed, be extremely helpful, by way of encouragement and confidence.

Hugging anybody, in certain circumstances, can, indeed, instill confidence and trust in the person that is being hugged.  When someone feels dejected for some reason or the other, to the point of seeming inconsolable, a hug can surely help uplift that person’s spirit,  give him assurance, as well as encouragement.  We notice mourners being hugged by those attending a funeral. The gesture is considered to be an act of consolation and condolence.  A warm, well-meaning hug has the potential of strengthening relationships, instilling hope and confidence and conveying a silent message that there is no need to despair if one can only look on the bright side of life.

In this day and age, hugging is so rare. Our society is so sensitive about everything, that everyone is AFRAID to hug a child, lest they be accused of molesting the child, and go to prison for life. I agree with you HUGS are crucial to comfort a child, and let him /her know that they matter, and are loved. Wonderful piece.
