Creativity, out-of –the box thinking, or insights are not something that happens to a select number of people. There are many different ideas regarding creativity, and there are skills that can be used and cultivated to increase the creative output.

Edward de Bono promotes the idea that creative ideas can be generated by serious thinking. Others like the actors and comedian John Cleese suggest that ideas and creative output is the result of more unconscious thinking.

Cleese recommends creative people to sleep on the problem and to return to the problem after a while. He argues that the unconscious works while you are concentrating on other things and that this may later improve the work.  Interruptions are the greatest threat to the creative process. Being interrupted stops the flow and it is difficult to remember and trace back the thoughts.

In this video John Cleese shares his ideas.
