Meeting John Hannah in Devon last Spring Bank Holiday made me decide to delve into some research about this iconic actor.
BY JUPITER … IT’S JOHN HANNAH!

The day I met John Hannah was a glorious blue-skied June day. It was in Devon, in the little village of Dittisham, just outside the Red Lion, the pub where my sister and I were staying for three nights.
My sister (living in Oz for more than twenty years) waltzed into the pub, leaving me to catch a few more rays of sunshine – and walked straight back out, saying, ‘There’s somebody famous inside.”

I popped my head in through the narrow doorway of the quaint, olde-worlde pub and recognised John Hannah, amidst a gaggle of locals and tourists who vied for his attention. I’d recently been watching the epics Spartacus: Blood and Sand and Spartacus: Gods of the Arena – and I was star-struck.
“I’ll wait for him to come out,” I said, “I might grab a photograph. Ask him if there’s another series of Spartacus coming out.”
MOURING THE DEATH OF ANDY (SPARTACUS) WHITFIELD

What made me recall meeting with John Hannah on that warm, hazy June afternoon – and what prompted me to write this article, was the recent death of Andy Whitfield, the actor who played the character Spartacus. He has died, aged 39, after battling against non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Perhaps now, there will be no more of the Spartacus epics delivered to our television sets. Who knows?
It’s a sad day when a great actor dies – and Andy Whitfield played a superb role as Spartacus.

R.I.P. Andy.
“If you never watched an episode of Spartacus, then you ought to rectify that and do so immediately. The show quickly became one of my favourite shows, due in large part to Andy’s performance as the title character (in addition to the equally excellent work of John Hannah and Lucy Lawless)”
