Michelle talks about how she used to be part of a web community that just sort of faded out.
Lonelygirl15, you’ve no doubt heard of it.. It was one of the biggest internet phenomenons, one that also spawned a lot of other bloggers today online .. When lonelygirl15 videos first came into play on the popular video blogging site Youtube.com a lot of people questioned the authenticy of the videos themselves, There were a few videos posted to the channel on youtube, her name was bree, and she was new to this whole vlogging thing. Many people before lonelygirl15 hit the youtube market, were few and far between. I mean there was thewinekone and paytotheorderofofof, and of course the Brookers most of us old youtube users know and love.
But when people started to doubt the reality of the videos Bree was posting onto this channel, sometimes with her friend Daniel (or a purple monkey puppet) they started doing some digging onlike, eventually they found out that Bree was actually an actress named Jessica Lee Rose, from new zealand.. and Daniel, was an actor based in the california area named Yousef Abu-Taleb. and that Lonelygirl15 was all a project, a webseries if you will.. While they’re have been webseries’ before Lonelygirl15 became popular, Not many were widely known by the general public.
People were shocked, people were mad that someone had messed with their heads.. People even made response videos talking about how they couldn’t believe Bree was just another character in another made up, fictional online series. the viewers had really gotten into her story and felt like they knew her and connected with her in a way that they weren’t sure they could with anyone else, People related with Bree.. being the homeschooled freak i am (not that homeschooling is a bad thing, i love it) i know exactly where this is coming from..
When i first discovered Lonelygirl15 it was already way past the point of people finding out about it being a project, I started watching the series and i fell deeply in love with the writing and the characters, There was a website where all the videos were posted and people commented them, there were forums were people could talk.. but i never really found myself engaging in much community activity, although i did meet some of my closest friends from the old lg15 forums. When the creators of the series, Greg goodfried, Amanda Goodfried and Miles beckett ended the first season of Lonelygirl15 by killing off their main character, people got mad.. people stopped watching because they felt like they had been gipped, it was the exact same reaction that people had in the first place when they found out Bree was just an actress. The creators made another websites after the finale season of Lonelygirl ended entitled The Resistance.. Which came with a site upgrade and new features.. it wasn’t just another site with standing videos and a scrolling down comments section. There was profiles, there were still comments but they were merged with the forums.. I got more into the community around this time and i met a lot of my favorite people there on the forums solving puzzles that were shown to us in the series and so we could progress the characters, Lonelygirl being a very interactive webseries.. they had promoted the community into helping with the characters problems and puzzles.. So the characters would post their puzzles onto the forum pages and we, the lonelycrackers would crack the code and make a comment on the characters profile or a response video on youtube letting Jonas or Daniel or even Sarah know that we cracked their code. and they can move on in the story.
