An essay written on the effects of dishonesty.

Effects of Dishonesty

I am writing this essay on the effects of dishonesty. How it affects you, members of your family, and others around you. It should not be something that you use to your own advantage, as it can do more damage than you might realise. Dishonesty is the fundamental component of a majority of offences relating to the acquisition, conversion and disposal of property (tangible or intangible) defined in the criminal law as quoted by Wikipedia. Generally it can also mean other things, such as theft, lying, cheating, or even fraud.

There are many different interpretations of dishonesty. Fraud, which is an intentional deception made for personal gain or to damage another individual. Lying, this is another form of deception, telling untruthful statements to protect people’s feelings, or even avoid punishment. Cheating, this can give a person an unfair advantage over something by breaking the rules. And Theft, which is the illegal taking of another person’s property without the owner’s consent, whether it be a water truck, or a piece of jewellery it is still a serious offence.

After breaking the law (unlawfully taking a motor vehicle while intoxicated), committing my own dishonest offence, I have had quite a harsh punishment compared to my other mates. I’ve had to do fifteen hours community service, and suffered quite a bit for something that never should have happened. I don’t know what I was thinking when we committed this offence, but I surely hope it never happens to me again. Having a criminal history can affect your chances of getting a decent job/career later in life, as some places may refuse to hire someone with those circumstances.

Victims of dishonesty can suffer emotional harm and loss of fortune, especially if they have been a victim of a robbery or mugging. Perpetrators of dishonest crimes that have been charged can be given prison terms for their offences. The impact that would have on them and their families would be horrible, losing a family member, parents leaving their children and going to prison. I am an only child with no father living with my mother. So she was not impressed with what I had done. The added stress and cost of my reparation is not something I intended to add to her already stressful life.

If you are an honest person, hopefully you can try and keep yourself out of situations like this, as I have experienced how easily something can go wrong and how easy it is to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I know that dishonesty can cause a lot of problems for people and families, and is against the law. But it also has other effects such as wasting people’s time and money, and doing emotional damage. Dishonesty affects everyone around us, whether you choose to live by the law, or against it is your choice.
