A first, the first of many…
When the day was about over and you were leaving, I was pretty sure something should have been done. I needed to do something that very moment before you were gone. There was no telling of when we would see each other again.
So we said our goodbyes and the chance was almost missed until I decided to get all cheesy about things. And I did. What was I going to do? I had my eye on your cheek, looking all rosy and warm and soft. The flash in your eyes told me you knew what I was thinking. Briefly, I considered the fact that we were standing in a lot full of urban decay and seagulls but even so, I still wanted to. Quite a bit. It was almost spontaneous.
For a very, very short moment, everything vanished and we were the only two people alive at the moment, the only ones inhabiting our world. I heard the song playing but it had faded to a muted humming in the back of my mind. All the cars had turned to sculptures, the buildings were glass walls reflecting sunlight, and we stood on a tiny raft in the middle of a calm sea. I opened my eyes to the sky seeming brighter, the clouds more vibrant in the sunset than they were from just a moment ago. And then, everything vanished one more time and that was it. My heart jolted out of its cage and burst into ribbons of colorful light and fire. Tremors ran through my organs as new butterflies hatched. On contact, electricity connected everything between us, from something so simple and quiet.
What was it?
It was
Soft,
Firm,
Sweet,
Red,
Gentle,
Sincere,
Warm,
Pretty,
Close,
Wonderful, all the same.
The first of many.
Afterwards, as our physical paths split but our spiritual paths binded into a tighter, brighter twist, my smile plastered itself on and stayed for a while. Even once I was safely inside my home, there it stayed. The memory, the thought, the idea, all of it was branded into my mind for the time being, though I doubt I could ever forget about it. No, I don’t think I will. How could I?
Just wait till the next one. And the next one. And the next one…
