When I was younger, the future (which is now the present), seemed way more cool than it turned out to be. I mean, why aren’t we riding horses all over town by now?

When I was younger, the future (which is now the present), seemed way more cool than it turned out to be. Thirty years ago, I remember being told something to the effect that we would be running out of fossil fuel in twenty years. To me, this was a pretty awesome future, it meant we would all go back to riding horses to school. What could be better?

I grew up in the city, but always wanted to live in the country, or at least have a horse in my back yard. This wasn’t a very realistic thing, or so my parents told me. But, the bright news was surely that in the future we wouldn’t have gasoline to power our automobiles. In my mind that meant horses!

To this day I don’t know what went wrong. We have more people on our planet than ever before, more of them have cars, and yet we still haven’t run out of gas. What the heck is going wrong? Where is my horse and buggy?

More people have cars now, than they did twenty years ago, and horses are being shot because people cannot afford to feed them.

THIS IS THE FUTURE!!!!

We have personal computers, phones that you can carry, radios so small they fit in a pocket, we have televisions that are so light you can hang them on the wall. We have magic cloths that can soak up liquid, we have liquid that you can drink to replace a meal. Kids have their own phones, and yet we are not riding horses to work. I don’t even like cell phones.

Dang.

I used to hate Hummers, but maybe they are the answer, maybe if enough people drive Hummers they will suck up all the gasoline so the rest of us can ride horses through the “ride through” fast food joints. I wonder if they would offer side orders of hay and oats?

I guess it wouldn’t just be horses either, we could ride camels, elephants and even have oxen pulling our wagons. We could use dog sleds, goat carts, or wait…

I just realized something.

Black Beauty. I read the book. I saw the movie. It was sad. In the days when horses did pull our buggies they also suffered, dying in the streets, being driven too hard and fed too little.

Well, that just sucks, because I thought I was going somewhere, but it turns out I wasn’t.

I guess the future will continue to see us with more technology and fewer trees. More parking lots, fewer parks, more televisions, fewer life visions. More factories, fewer farms, more Hummers, fewer horses. Dang, the future sucks.

There’s no perfect solution! But in the countryside, I love to see working horses and those used for pleasure. Theres still a few around me, but nowhere near as many as when I was a child….and I’m 41 now.

I’ll see people riding horses around here once in a while, but not that often any more.

B- I do not think technology is the problem….it is the way humans use technology. For example, a cell phone. A cell phone can be great if you break down on the side of the road, if you have an emergency away from land lines, etc… However, as usual, human nature is to abuse the technology with hours of chit chat, careless text messaging while driving, etc… The same with cars. Using cars to expediently get to neccessary destinations is a good thing. Joy riding and teenagers spending hours riding about aimlessly is abuse. So, I do not think that technology is a bad thing….it is the way that people use it that sucks.

Nice article, but I have to agree with Jo Oliver, its our own way of abusing the technology. I have had to use my cell phone a couple of times for an emergency, and was nice to have it around. But have to admit, when they first came out, I was a bit careless, even bumped a car at red light as thought light was green but was trying to check a message at same time. I learned my lesson, I DO NOT use my phone in cars while driving, not even a blue tooth. :)

Very true. And people wonder why I like history so much. The future sucks, the past is where it’s at! Heehee

Most of the problems derive from want not need….. Don\’t get me wrong, the future is now and every person on the planet is making it. We could have a huge debate about want not need – no one is to blame really, but at the same time everyone is. When I look at my Gran who is 96, I see someone who is totally at ease and content with what she has, unfortunately in this generation, this is not the case – it is always I want what so and so\’s got or I don\’t like this even though \”this\” may be perfectly perfect.

I do think life has got far too complicated and it is time to bring back more simplicity – not just for the everyday person – this rule applies to everyone including the politicians.

What more can I say really – I love horses

I enjoyed reading your article. People really do rely on technology more now than ever before. I can only imagine what we all will be using next.

I want to thank you so much for taking the time to read my article too. I really do appreciate it.

Wouldn’t it be great to go back to the horse and buggy days? Well not realy. Most people wouldn’t know how to survive so I guess we will have to depend on our youngsters getting wiser and preparing for a gasless planet. It would be interesting to know what they come up with. You can bet it will be something we would never dream of.

lol…a very interesting perspective of the future through the eyes of a person who obviously loves simplicity and the natural life. People still ride horse and buggy in places, here even in Holland on the weekend around the countryside.

I like what you are imparting here B.If we were to keep things simple and orientated towards a better place, what a place that would be. We are indeed consumed by the fastest, bestest, non biodegradable gadgets known.
I had a horse one time, it used to rock back and forth, made by my grandfather and handed down thereafter.
Point being if people were to really think, stop and think and what effect all of this “now stuff”is having on people and society in general. Make one change, one small thing to improve where we are and where we are heading.Maybe there would be a chance of holding on to real bright lights from the past.
    THANKS FOR SHARING.

I always wanted a horse. I was told that we could feed and care for three cows on what a horse would cost. Maybe we should focus on oxen?

    great

When we do run out of gas, what are we going to do with the zillions of cars on the planet? I wish I had been born 200 years ago, but I’m glad I won’t be born 200 years in the future at that rate man is destroying the planet. Great article.

  • ken bultman on May 18, 2009

Telling it like it is. Ruthann rode her mare near her childhood Orlando home where now a large shopping mall exists. We still keep a few goats for company but grain and hay costs more than gas these days.

  • jharmon on May 18, 2009

Ha! You wanted horses, I wanted flying cars. Neither of us got what we wanted. :-)

  • EnergyFist on Mar 5, 2011

People deny some existence things because they want scientific proof! Thats not the way to live!
ladybaby you won’t be born, but someone else with be born with the soul you have now! You lived in a past and will live in a future its just there is a time lag between reincarnation! 50-400 years(may be more or less, depends on situation )! So that means, you rided on horses! Its just now we live in this era because there is something for us to discover and accomplish! I may sound like stone age sage but thats true and there is nothing to worry about!
