The deep cold weather has a way of equalizing people.

Cold weather has a way of bringing everyone to the same level. When the weather drops to -10 C for the first time, it feels incredibly cold. The homeless are given an indoor space to keep warm, and hopefully regular meals. The temperature drops further and the rich are forced to dress up in puffy coats and big boots rather than the fancy attire they normally express themselves with. Even the cars are equaled out. The rusty old Chevrolet is covered in salt and mud exactly the same as the spankin new Jaguar sitting next to it in the Tim Horton’s parking lot.  Each and every person must walk over the ice to get into the building, and each and every person is capable of falling on that ice.  All citizens feel the bite of the cold, and accept it as part of life. The proof is that they stay from year to year to shiver through the chilliest parts. A sense of community is built by the cold. Rich and poor alike join together in the pride of survival of the deep sub zero temperatures. Will it drop to -40 this year?  Fahrenheit and Celsius join together at -40 as if to encourage the spirit of community.  And once the really cold weather passes -10C appears again. This time it is received with relief.  It is warm again. The temperature rises, and the snow begins to melt, creating a mud and slush world. Now the community begins a new battle: the thaw.
