A short article about being Visually Impaired and using the internet for most everyday things that sighted people would not need to.

A service that I could not live without, would be, hands down…The Internet. Its not for the porn, or the recent boom in popularity with Facebook and Twitter, or even the growing piracy industries! So why? Well its simple! Being a Visually Impaired person, the Internet has opened up a wealth of possibilities and information for me, that otherwise I would not be able to access. Take Internet Banking for example, a service that most take for granted, but for me, a necessity as I cant see to read my bank statements but can access them through a web browser. Another big part of the Internet that I use on a daily basis is Email. Just about everyone everywhere has an email account, but for me, its that little bit more special. Email to me is what regular mail is to the general public. Although I cant get 100% of my snail-mail in my electronic inbox, as more and more companies come on the Internet and Email, it does open many doors and breaks down those horrible inaccessible communication barriers. There are many more resources on the Internet for the Visually Impaired, that attempt to break the communication barriers between the sighted and blind worlds. One of the most useful aids on the Internet is an accessible Capatcha Website. Capatchas are those annoying codes that have to be entered into Website in order to complete a registration process. They are designed to combat SPAM and Fraudulent activity, but they severely limit those like myself, who cannot see them. This Website can tell you what the Capatcha is on most sites that require them, thus allowing Blind and Visually Impaired people to access otherwise inaccessible sites. Perhaps the best thing about the Internet is that its futureproof. As technology improves, so does the Internet, expanding the possibilities and extending the boundaries like never before. The Internet for me, is a blessing from above.
