“The world is round and the place which may seem like the end may also be the beginning” (Ivy Baker Priest). In the realistic fiction book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, Dallas Winston and his gang are at what seems like the end of the world. Then things just start becoming worse, and Dally learns to show some sort of emotion. Between the time when Dally was just another kid who always got in trouble and when the only thing he could ever love died, he changes a plethora.
In the beginning everyone always described Dally the same way. “He was tougher than the rest of us – tougher, colder, meaner” (10). He was not exactly what you would call a caring guy. He did not love a thing, well except for Johnny. Johnny was the only person Dally ever really cared about, the only person Dally would ever care to make sure he doesn’t get into any trouble. But he never showed that emotion to anybody, nobody knew that Dally loved Johnny. Dally could barely convince himself of that.
As the story progresses Johnny commits a murder, and Dally had to help him get away. Dally knew that Johnny would get in trouble; he just couldn’t let that happen. Dally told Johnny “you get hardened in jail. I don’t want that to happen to you. Like it happened to me…” (90) That was the first time that Dally ever seemed to show any type of emotion towards anybody. “He didn’t give a Yankee dime about anyone but himself…” (90) Ponyboy thought to himself after Dally said that.
By the end, Dally starts to show how much love he has for Johnny. You could never imagine someone who hated the world so much, loving someone so much. He changes because he starts to show his emotions. Dally let down his guard around Johnny, not caring what anybody else thought. When Johnny dies, Dally couldn’t take it. He punched the wall and ran straight out of the room. He went to the grocery store and robbed it. He called the gang to come meet him in the lot since the police were after him. That night, Dally committed suicide by cop. “Dally raised the gun and I thought: you blasted fool. They don’t know you’re only bluffing… I knew that was what Dally wanted…I knew he would be dead because Dally Winston wanted to be dead and he always got what he wanted.” (154)
Throughout this story Dally realizes that just building a wall around you won’t help with anything. You have to show people how you feel and let them know you love them. He learned that lesson because he loved Johnny with all his heart, that’s why he died for him. Dally changed from being a guy who hated the world to a guy who died out of love. “But Johnny was right. He died gallant.” (154).
