A short story about Thanksgiving by ten year old Breezy Hallock.

Encouraging our children to write through creative writing can be enjoyable and challenging for all children.  Learning how to express oneself through writing takes only paper, a pencil and a little imagination.  With some encouragement along with a little guidance can turn out some very interesting stories.  Children are our future and who knows what future writers await us.

All parents want their children to develop their imaginations and not be afraid to express themselves.  Creative writing is a wonderful way to promote this development and at the same time, have fun.

The idea is to get them to start writing about any subject they want.  At first, they will make many mistakes with sentence structure, spelling, grammar etc but this is OK and must be allowed without criticism.  As time goes on, they will learn and grow into great writers.

My ten-year-old daughter watches me as I write articles so I challenged her the other day to write a Thanksgiving story of her own and told her I would publish it for all the world to read.  The story you are about to read was written by Breezy Hallock, ten years old.  I want her to know I am proud of her for a job well done.

The Purple Turkey By Breezy Hallock

Once upon a time, there was a purple turkey.  There were evil, crazy and mean farmers who sold purple turkeys for money.  One day, the second thanksgiving was near and there were no other turkeys left to sell (they had always kept one turkey for themselves to eat on thanksgiving). Therefore, they had to fatten up that turkey so they fed it five times more than before!

By two weeks, the turkey got a roommate. It was a male turkey. About two more weeks later, the turkey was not getting fat! Later that afternoon, the farmer found out the female turkey was pregnant!

The turkey later had babies. The babies were purple too! However, the babies grew so slow. “Paw can we cook the babies with the bigger ones?” said the farmer’s daughter. “All right, but, I get first dibs!”

The father turkey overheard the whole conversation while looking for his reading glasses. Therefore, he went to tell his family and they made the perfect escape plan. At night, they would go and unscrew the fence and run into the wild where they could make a new home and not sit next to stuffing on the table on Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving was only three days away and there plan was underway! The bottom holes were unscrewed and they pushed the board away.

Back at the house, the farmer was making the stuffing for the big day tomorrow and getting the farm decorated for the special holiday. The farmer said, “I can’t wait till I dig into them thar fat turkeys!” as he pointed to the turkey’s cage. “That’s a good one pa”, said Suzy.

Thanksgiving arrived and all Mr. and Mrs. Gilligan’s friends were there, and very hungry. “Pa I’m going to go fetch them turkeys”.  So little ole’ Suzy went to the turkey’s cage but found nothing but a stack of hay. Suzy went to tell her dad and he just lost it.”Thanksgiving is ruined *s@#%k*#@$%&!” yelled the farmer, and let us just say the rest of the conversation was not pretty.

In the end, the lovely turkeys lived happily ever after, uncooked. The end.

Conclusion

Teaching our children to express their thoughts through creative writing can lead to possibilities beyond comprehension.  Allowing them to speak freely, ask questions and voice their opinions whether it is verbally or on paper has to have positive results in the development of whom they are and whom they will become.
