This is an essay I wrote about a slave running away from a sugar cane plantation in the Caribbean.

All that could be heard were heavy, fast paced footsteps, the rustling of cane leaves and the barking f dogs in the distance as a slave attempts to escape the torture of working on the plantation.

He had been contemplating on the risky plan for months, but finally found the courage to execute it after he an several others were severely beaten for not harvesting as much cane as was demanded. That night, he snuck out of his hut and made for the fields.

As soon as he began ploughing through the field, a guard noticed some of the cane rustling and immediately called out to the other guards. When the slave heard the shout, he broke out in a frantic run, then the barking of several dogs were heared in the distance.

After about three hours, he came upon a small river. He paused for a second and listened for his trackers. Hearing nothing but the sound of nature, he replenished himself in the cool waters. He cleaned out all his bruises and cuts, drank some water and relaxed a bit.

He left the river and stumbled under a nearby mango tree to have some of the delicious fruit to regain some strength. Being as exhausted as he was, he unknowingly fell asleep and had a rude awakening to a barking dog. As he got up to flee, the dog jumped and clamped onto his arm. In the excruciating pain, he slammed the dog against a tree, it let out a sharp whine and retreated. As he looked at the dog running away, he saw what it was running to…two guards of the plantation, both armed. As soon as he turned to run, shots were fired.

Now running as fast as he can, he heared bullets plant themselves in trees and branches, shread through the air and leaves and then, he felt one rip through his arm. He collapsed to the ground and was overwhelmed by the pain. The guards caught up to him. He was beaten for his foolish act and was carried back to the plantation, where he would possibly have furthur punnishment.
