I recall watching Scattered Africa last semester in Caribbean Studies. At that time I was so blown away about all the facts and information being shared that I had a hard time taking notes. However, this time I listened more and was able to absorb more.

While I was still awed by the wealth of information being shared I was taken in more by the term Diaspora itself, and the fact that we share so much in common with our brothers and sisters throughout the Diaspora.

First, the term Diaspora itself was a bit confusing to me because I had seen and heard it used in many ways and was unsure of the true meaning of the term. However, after viewing this video I now know that when I hear Diaspora used in terms of people of African descent scattered throughout the world this is what is meant by the term Diaspora. I was specifically intrigued with the way that this term seems to almost become a string or chain linking people of African descent together.

A lot of the participants of this video talked about the commonalities shared by African Americans and people of the African Diaspora. I liked this part of the video in particular because it validated my arguments that I make with members of my church. They always that we have been brainwashed by the Department of Pan African Studies and that if my sister and I ever went to Africa they would turn us away because we are not part of Africa’s history.

I think this video could have a profound effect on all African Americans, but specifically those who believe there are no ties that bind us to the African Diaspora.
