In a world full of problems, how can one say it is changing for the better?
The world is not changing for the better. Despite the fact that technology may be improving, there are many developing problems in our world today, I will use four specific examples: driving, teen suicide, Churches, and obesity.
Remember back in the ‘70’s and even earlier on? “…and road rage! We never had road rage!” said my grandmother when commenting on my driving skills and giving me tips on it. Today, people are selfish and will further themselves at the expense of others. When was the last time someone cut you off or merged angrily into your lane, forcing you to back off and let them in? How about using that in the broader perspective of life? My objective is to make the world a better place leaving than when I entered. AS a Lacrosse referee, how do those young players make it an easier job on me if all they do to each other is slash? I have never been in a game where there was not a coach, player, or fan angry at me when in reality it was their fault for the late hit they made.
In church, they say that ninety percent of highschoolers never return to a Church after the graduate the twelfth grade. Would this be developing their character to make a positive impact on the world? How about the rising number of teen suicides? Would those bullies or those victims have acted the same way if they were part of a religion and received the message “God loves you?”
My last example shows how obesity is becoming more of a problem in the United States. Our nation is the fattest in the world, and like Dr. Spineburg said “We need advancement in fitness, not in medicine.” Sadly, the latter is use more often than naught.
In essence, all of these problems could be solved by nicer people, more activity, and visiting your local church once a week. However, the prevalence of these problems shows how people care for themselves at the expense of others, and sometimes at a fatal cost.
