It is a sad fact that children go missing every day, but the mysterious disappearance of Madeline McCann is the most highly publicised investigation of its type in our time. Madeline disappeared from her bedroom whilst on holiday in Portugal. She was asleep in bed a short distance from where her parents were dining. Although the McCann’s have been cleared of any involvement in her disappearance, there are still some unanswered questions I would like to put to you.

Madeline was conceived by IVF treatment and Kate is said to have been over the moon with the arrival of her new daughter. Her interviews with the press are full of descriptions of Madeline’s personality and how loved she was. I find it strange then that Kate would leave the young girl (whom she thought the world of) in an apartment bedroom on the ground floor in a foreign country. I also find it strange that she declined the babysitting service which was available and had no qualms about leaving the child unsupervised during a meal with friends.

In the wake of Madeline’s disappearance, friends and relatives have come out in praise of Kate’s parenting, saying what a wonderful Mother she was. However it is claimed that Kate heard Madeline become distressed at being left alone in the apartment the night before her disappearance. Had she been trying to tell her Mother that there was a predator on the loose? And if so why had the loving Mother not responded to her crying?

After her daughter’s disappearance, Kate was often pictured with what has been described as Madeline’s favourite toy – Cuddle Cat. Much has been made of the fact that Cuddle cat was not taken by the person/s who Kidnapped Maddie. Children hate to be parted from their favourite toy and a paedophile or child stealer would have not wanted to raise alarm by the child crying for their comforter. Cuddle cat was said to have been found on a high shelf.

It also seems highly irregular that Kate was allowed to keep Cuddle Cat and she was widely photographed by the press clutching the pink soft toy. Could this have been to provoke sympathy and direct attention away from Kate as suspect? Under most circumstances I would have expected the cat to have been sealed in a plastic bag and kept by police. However, the toy was washed. Kate Claims he was just ‘too grubby’ and yet she was washing away the smell and last reminders of her daughter.

DNA was found in the form of blood in both the apartment and in the parent’s Renault Scenic. Some sources claim that sniffer dogs detected the scent of a corpse in the car. Nothing has ever been concluded from these findings which leads us to wonder whether there is more to this story than we are told.
