This is a rough beginning of a current project i’m working on. I recently moved to LA to get more involved in film, and decided I would write a book or short paper on not only surviving in LA, but to encourage people to chase their dreams. Again, its not completed, its just begun.
So you want to move to California…or Los Angeles…or even Hollywood to be specific, eh?
Everyone says how expensive california is…or how ghetto LA is…or how rude the people are; Don’t listen to them. On January 3rd of 2012, I packed up my bags from little ole Omaha NE and made the transition to West Hollywood. I was a little nervous and sad about leaving my friends and family for the first time, but I knew i had to go. With my soul sisters having my back, we hopped in the car and drove the 27 hours and arrived in our new home 2 days later.
Tip #1: Be sure to have the roommate situation figured out before you leave. You do NOT want to be stuck sleeping in your car or get a roommate you won’t get a long with. Plan all that out ahead of time and talk to your future roommate excessively before the move. You will then get a better feel for eachother and have a better plan once you arrive.
Crowded apartments are not bad, we have 4 people in a 2 bedroom…we only pay 200 a person and have plenty of space…don’t be picky. All you need is a place to shower, eat, and sleep. You will thank me for this later.
Tip #2: Try to get a place to live that is very centralized. You will be thankful when you can walk almost anywhere. Not only is it a great workout, but you also tan while you walk, and don’t have to worry about moving your car and finding a new parking spot.
There will be a lot of emotional tension wearing on you as you prepare for the move. I had planned my move out 6 months in advance…I do NOT suggest this. The stress will wear you thin and you will begin wondering if you will ever make it out there. You WILL consider staying, wonder if it would really be that big of a deal, think how much easier it would be if you don’t go. Don’t listen to yourself. If you really wanted to stay, you wouldnt have considered moving in the first place. You want something, go after it.
Tip # 3: Moving with friend is not a bad idea. It will take a lot of the stress and pressure off of you emotionally, physically, and financially. 2 heads are better than 1 and teamwork only improves your chances of staying here longer.
