Some thoughts on thinking.

Thinking is a dangerous business. I’ve known this for a while, but I rediscovered that truth today. Surely we’ve all had that experience where things we’d rather not pay attention to make their way into our head anyways; usually those things are outside of our control and we ultimately feel something close to despair because of it. And then we reason that if such things are outside of our control, then it is best to just leave them be and let God or Fate or Destiny or Chance (whatever you believe in, really) take care of it for you.

That’s a completely understandable and natural process.

But what about when those things you’re thinking of are totally within your power to control? Well, in that case it says an awful lot about your character, doesn’t it?

If you were in a situation, and you knew that in order to get out of that situation all you had to do was speak a word, and you didn’t –what does that say about you? A number of things, actually; none of them good:

1) You’re too lazy to say what needs to be said.
2) You like having an excuse to feel sorry for yourself.
3) You’re selfish.

This is what I uncovered about myself today while I was busy thinking. Some cold, harsh realities. And I don’t say that to garner anyone’s sympathy. I say it because it is the truth, and the truth –no matter how hard it is– deserves to be told, by virtue of itself.

Moral of the story: Be careful where you let your thoughts take you. You may discover who you are.

The end.
