Tower Hill is a dormant volcano situated in south-western Victoria. This volcano is situated on the south-west coast of Victoria near Armstrong Bay. The area around Tower Hill generally is flat however there are some places near the crater where some slopes can have a steep incline. The highest point of the Tower Hill crater is roughly 100m.
Tower Hill is a crater that has a small mountain range of Maar volcanoes and Scoria cones surrounded by two lakes. The scoria cones and Maar volcanoes have many inclines and declines. There is a swamp called Kelly Swamp south-east of Tower Hill. This place doesn’t have much civilization in it as it is not suitable for living conditions. On the west side of Tower Hill, north of Killarney, there is an area of land that is subject to inundation meaning the land is also uncivilized. On the north of Tower Hill, there is a town called Koroit. The town is located there as of the tourist coming here and a railway station from Geelong to Port Fairy just on the outskirts of Koroit. The land around Koroit is generally used for farming as the soil there is quite rich and the steepness of the land is quite low, meaning the gradient is not very high at all.
The tow features that have shaped Tower Hill are the Maar volcanoes and the Scoria cones. Maar volcanoes erupt if groundwater comes in contact with hot lava or magma. A maar volcano is filled with water to a shallow level. There is a subsurface dyke and sill system underneath the maar lake. This is the cause of the eruption. The top of the Maar lake is called a Tephra ring. This is where all the water sits on. Underneath is the upper diatreme and below this is the lower diatreme. If a Maar volcano is produced over this, it could result in a violent expansion of magma gas or steam. At first there is a Scoria cone. Then slowly after some time, it will start to form a scoria mound with a curved surface. Soon after there will be a Maar, known as a lake. After this there will be nested scoria cones. These are the kind of cones that now appear on Tower Hill. After this Strato volcanoes will form, but this will be a long process.
The landscapes around Tower Hill have been very useful to people. The soil in the northern parts of Tower Hill are rich and good for farming, where as in the south most of the land is left abandoned. The reason the southern part is left abandoned is because it is a rocky place and there is a big swamp down there which in turn later on in the life cycle of agriculture could attract locusts and would destroy the crops.
Overall, Tower Hill is a reasonable place both for agriculture, industrial and civil purposes. Although some of the land is rather flat Tower Hill is quite steep. Tower Hill is a famous tourist attraction and most people these days use the land to build hotels to assure these customers a safe trip to Tower Hill and back.
