I have been fascinated with hats. I collect hats – different types of hats. Aside from protection and looks, hats possess lots of interesting background about it. Here are 10 types of hats you may consider collecting.

1. Baseball Cap

Perhaps a baseball cap is the easiest to wear type. That is why it is the most popular hat of all. It was first used for the sport baseball but it is now worn as a casual hat.

2. Bowler Hat

This type of hat got its name from its makers Thomas Bowler and William Bowler. Back in the 1850’s, the bowler hat was worn to protect the head when horseback riding. Another popular name for a bowler hat is “derby”.

3. Cowboy Hat

A cowboy hat is traditionally worn by farmers, ranchers and cowboys when they are working on the field. Its main purpose is for protection from the sun, flies, etc. It is also the traditional attire of Mexican nobility.

4. Fedora

Fedoras appeared in the 1800’s. It is often associated with wealth and class. It is recognizable with its soft felt, its pinched front and the crease around its crown. Sometimes, it is with a hat band.

5. Beret

A beret is a round hat that is worn usually pushed on one side. It originated in France and historically it is only worn in the military. 

6. Trilby Hat

This elegant type of hat originated in London. It almost resembles the fedora or the bowler hat except that its shorter brim which complements its sharp intended crown. 

7. Fez

A fez is a hat that is the shape of an abridged cone without a brim. It came from the Greek origins. Though it is not much worn these days, but it has a significant impact on some religions like Islam. I also happened to wear this hat once during my graduation in college.

8. Boonie Hat

A boonie hat is also commonly used in the military. Usually it comes with a camouflage color. The first to wear this hat were the US military during the Vietnam War.

9. Newsboy Cap

The newsboy cap obviously was intended for newsboy. Now, it has been used is a hat for any casual occasions. Its trademark design is the button on its top. 

10. Beanie

Originally, a beanie is a hat specially worn during winter seasons. It is designed firmly against the head to trap the heat on the head.

    Great compilation… I always thought that the bowler hat was named after it being shaped like a bowl or something. Go figure.
