This article will be about the different worlds (first, second, third) and how we want to help each other. It will also be about the ways we do this, and what’s wrong about it.

Introduction

Let me first explain who the first, second and third world is.

Look at this picture. It shows us the different countries and what world they belong to. So why is the world split up in these three worlds? Without telling along story about all this, I’ll just shortly tell you that the three worlds were separated during the Cold War era, each with its respective allies. Colors do not represent current economical development.

The first world: The United States and it’s allies.
The second world: The Soviet Union and it’s allies.
The third world: non aligned and neutral countries.

The first worlds help to the third world

As you all probably know, the first world (and maybe also the second world, I don’t know) is trying to help the third world by donating food and money. There’s been a lot of talk about how much of the money that people donate will go to the actual families in the third world. Because a lot of people have studied this and found out how it really happened. More than 50 % of the money is going to the company. I know, I know. A non-profit organization must get money from somewhere. But if you ask me. This is not the way to do it.

It is seen that a lot of people creates fake websites to donate money to the third world. This way they scam people and get the money for themselves. This was also seen after the Haiti catastrophe. My home-country is Denmark. And I’m not proud to say, that a week after the Haiti catastrophe happened, approx. 250 websites had been created.

Well this was a siding. I don’t believe that the way the first world is trying to help the third world is the right way. Of course it’s a great help to the people in need of help to get both money and food, but there must be another way. We need to get them to earn money themselves. Because even though it helps them a little, it’s not close to be enough.

A man named “Kristian von Hornsleth” from Denmark recently did a project in the third world. The project was to show the whole world how the first world roughly were thinking…

Kristian von Hornsleth made all the inhabitants of a small village in Uganda change their second name to “Hornsleth” in exchange for a sheep, a pig or a goat. The inhabitant’s portrait photos with their new ID cards in hand were exhibited in 2009 in Denmark’s “House of Politics”.

Kristian Hornsleth tells us that his project is designed to emphasize throughout the first world’s view of the third world – as a reaction to globalization and the way the West wants to help the third world, but also own it.

He also says that he does not believe in donations, but on free trade as the way to a better world. He has therefore acted with his name. The inhabitants was each given a pig, a sheep or a goat and Hornsleth got a lot of beautiful photos and a documentary (film).

Do you think Hornsleth’s actions is OK? Is it all right to give 500 people a pig if they just want to change their middle name, even though it’s only a project and kind of an experiment? And what could the consequences be? The, lets say African people, might not really have a choice. If they need food, they cannot refuse this deal, even though their name might be their identity or even their honor.

I hope you’re getting what I’m saying, as I personally don’t think this is all right. When that is said, I think this is a very interesting project, and a good way of showing how the first world wants to own the third world, in exchange of donations and help.

I think the way we give to charity now that such huge sums go in the CEO’s pocket. It’s a shame everything is skimmed off the top by the few. There should be a way to keep the greedy out of the pot and really help the needy.
