The biblical figure Pontius Pilate could have a scientific basis hitherto unknown. A study published in Science reveals the relationship between clean hands and clear conscience after taking a decision.

A study by the University of Michigan has found that people wash their hands immediately after a decision is less likely to rationalize their merits. This means that they are not convinced themselves that we made the best decision, but are able to objectively assess the pros and cons of their options, including those rejected.

“There is a clear and obvious psychological relationship between feeling morally and physically clean, clean, and between being psychologically and morally dirty,” Spike Lee says the researcher.

“We are going beyond metaphor. What we say to this study is that we can literally cleanse elements of our past and start fresh. I think this may have profound implications on how we live our lives.”

Although this discovery has practical applications preventive, confirms that the act of washing is not only physical but also emotional effect on humans and that the “clean” as moral symbol has a biological correlate.

Lee says that hand washing is about making a fresh start for the psychological residue of the brain, including the act to justify our actions. Although cleaning may leave the individual less satisfied with their choice, can help you evaluate the result of cold and rational way, which will benefit you for future decision making.
