Nicknames, first, middle and last names.

Most of us have names, some of us have middle names though I don’t have one. I do have a nickname though as do many people and sometimes it makes me wonder why some nicknames sound nowhere close to the person’s actual name. In Medieval times nicknames were all people had which were based on their apperance or personality such as “Charles the good” or “Charles the hammer”. By placing more emphasis on nicknames rather than names, we are reverting back to the times when first, middle and last names did not exist or existed in a different manner than they do today. A name doesn’t always define an individual but sometimes it can. Sometimes a nickname can become such an ordinary thing that the person is barely called by their real name anymore. Also, where I come from middle names don’t exist and sometimes it makes me wonder whether they should exist anywhere at all. Most people that have middle names barely hear them throughout their lives. However, I think that most people have a multitude of names out of pride or tradition and maybe having a nickname is a way of paying respect to the past, where nicknames were all people really had.

Nice article. From my experience, middle names are only given to cause embarrassment, I don’t know anyone who’s happy with their middle name. But nicknames can be fun!
