Jimi Hendrix is Overrated.

Now, I’m going to try and keep this short because i feel i don’t have much time before you get too frustrated and stop reading this so you can flame me.

If i ask someone why is Jimi Hendrix the best? I usually get one of two or both of the following responses: “He puts the most feel into his music” or “He revolutionized the guitar”. I’m not going to bother explain how he revolutionized the guitar, if you don’t know how he did that i suggest you go educate yourself a bit, because HE DID. If it wasn’t for Jimi many guitarists today wouldn’t be guitarists and the guitar might not be quite as popular.

Anyway, I’ll start off with the argument that frustrates me the most, “He puts the most feel into his music”. I like the composer Niccolo Paganini. Some of his compositions make me feel happy or sad, Melancholic, Angry, Motivated etc I could go on but i think you get the point. To me, i think Paganini’s compositions have more “feel” in them than other composers that I’ve heard. You may disagree with me, you may hate Paganini. That’s fine, i don’t care but that is EXACTLY my point. I feel emotion in his music, some people don’t. How much emotion one person feels from a piece of music is totally different from what another person may feel, in the same way that different people like different music. Saying he put the most feel in is not a valid argument.

The other argument is that he was the first to do many things and revolutionized the instrument. That’s right, he did. Being the first to do something does not make you the best at whatever it is that you have done first.

As for technical ability he is certainly not the best but being technical is not necessary to make good music. Even at his time he was not the best technically, at the time, the best guitarists would’ve been Jazz guitarists in terms of technicality. Then again being the best technically does definitely not mean you are the best, for example, i would say that Jimi Hendrix is a better guitar player than John Petrucci because i don’t feel any emotion in Johns Playing at all, some people will agree and some will disagree. I guess what I’m TRYING to say is that who the best guitarist is, is entirely opinionated. There is NO best guitarist who is better than everybody else as a universal truth everyone must agree with or die. Who the best guitarist is, is all opinion and one of the stupidest things you can do is argue about who is better.

Anyhow, that’s not too long of an article i don’t think. If you’ve managed to read this long without losing your temper WELL DONE YOU! Have one free internet!

Now let the flaming commence.

Jimi Hendrix has played all kinds of music if you did not know.
I agree that there cannot be any best person, but Jimi has been proven the best because of a survey done.. They wouldn\\\’t say he is the best because of no reason
Around 85% people think he is the best.

  • Mr Marx on Oct 28, 2009

That’s my point just because 85% of people that took the survey thougght he was best does not mean he is best. Not everyone in the world took a survey for who the best guitarist was. There is no best. It is just that 85% of people think he is best in their opinion.

  • MysticFire on Oct 28, 2009

You cannot go around to take everyones survey. You take an average. The average makes him the best.
So, you just have to accept him as the best.

It is the same way Micheal Jackson is called, “King Of Pop” and the same way Elvis Prestly is called, “The King Of Rock And Roll”.

  • Mr Marx on Oct 28, 2009

Doesn’t matter what the survey says. He is not the best to me, everyone has different opinions on it. Most people WOULD say Jimi is the best. To me he isn’t the best because i don’t feel as much emotion in his music as other music that i like. Emotion and feel in music is subjective so you can’t say that other people should see him as best because of the emotions, though it is perfectly ok to say that the emotion is why he is YOUR favourite because it’s subjective.

As far as technicality is concerned he is not the best. There are hundreds of players faster and cleaner. NOT that technicality is important for making music.

Surveys like that are not grounds for an argument. There is no absoloute best because it’s subjective in every way.

He is not my favorite. I am just against you because you think he is not the best does not mean he is not the best.
According to most of the people, He is the best. So you just have to deal with it.
I agree there is no best, but he is better than the other famous guitarist.
Name the, “other faster and cleaner guitarists”, you know please.

Jimi is said to be the best because:
    1. He has tried all genres
    2. Many other guitarists have been inspired by him
    3. Other guitarists also think he is the best(Read this on some other article)

My favorite guitarist of all time is Dave Mustaine.

  • Mr Marx on Oct 29, 2009

Name the other faster and cleaner guitarists?

    OK

    Yngwie malmsteen
    Marty Friedman
    Jason Becker
    Vinnie Moore
    Jeff Loomis
    Chris Broderick
    Chris Poland
    Steve Vai
    Tony Macalpine
    Rob Marcello
    Guthrie Govan
    Rob Marcello
    Joe Stump
    Mathew Mills
    Michael Angelo Batio
    John Petrucci

I could go on but i think you get it and anyway, like i said being technical is not required to make good music, it’s just that SOME idiots i’ve seen (not you or me) use being technical as an argument to say X guitarist is best.

Since when was popular opinion always the right one?

I’m not saying that because i think he is not the best that everyone else should say that. I’m saying people who think that he is the best and think that other people should agree with that are wrong.

    INTERESTING PERSPECTIVE.

  • RuI Gaio on Jan 16, 2012

Well, I for one think that technicallity is IMPORTANT to make music. Not absolutely fundamental, but quite important I would say. I also think that Hendrix is overrated because I would find difficult to accept him as being best just because he innovated and influenced most guitarists from his day, some of them being BETTER players themselves. I don’t deny his huge contribution to the importance of guitar is today’s rock – ditto for the Beatles. But neither of them are best just because they were fundamental pieces in modern day music. (I don’t include Elvis, coz I don’t get what’s so hype about him at all – but, then again, I am not american, and Elvis is an american phenomenon…)… I am diverging so I will shut up… now!

I think you’re mistaking the distinction between the generally accepted “best” with who’s your favorite.
