Some more of those unanswerable questions.

Have you ever wondered why it is that most of the questioning words begin with ‘W’?

What, where, when, why, which and who.

Since the very beginning of human existence we have been pondering questions about life. Many of them have been answered and for that we are truly grateful, some can easily be answered by Google, but here are a few of my “WHY?” questions I am still left wondering about.

  • Why don’t they make mouse flavoured cat food?
  • Why is there always a teaspoon left in the sink when you’ve finished the washing up?
  • Why do they call the lids on medicine bottles “child proof” when many adults struggle to open them too?
  • Why does the label on a rain coat say “wash before wearing”?
  • Why do you always end up with odd socks after doing the washing?
  • Why don’t psychics ever win the lottery?
  • Why is it assumed that anyone wearing glasses is clever?
  • Why do they make square boxes to put round pizzas in?
  • Why do they call it a ‘square meal’ when it’s served on a round plate?
  • Why do we press harder on the remote when we know the batteries are dying?
  • Why on earth is there an ‘s’ in the word ‘lisp’?
  • Why is there a light in the refrigerator but not in the freezer?
  • Why do we keep running over a piece of cotton with the vacuum, bend down to pick it up then put it back and try again?
  • Why do we never hear ‘father in-law jokes’?
  • Why do we buy DVDs in a rectangle case and not a round one?
  • Why do we say ‘raised to the ground’ when a building burns down?
  • Why do cats’ bottoms lift up when you fuss them?
  • Why do dogs wag their tails when happy and cats wag them when they’re NOT?
  • Why do they lock sardines in a tin and put the key on the outside?
  • Why do we say “I’m going to the bathroom” when we really need the toilet?
  • Why don’t sheep shrink in the rain?
  • Why does the phone always ring when you’re in the bath?
  • Why don’t they put all the advertising at the end of a DVD?
  • Why do we tell children not to lie yet we make them believe in Santa, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy?
  • Why do we call it ‘tripping up’ when we are falling down?
  • Why do we take copies of files before deleting them?
  • Why do we keep leftovers in the fridge when we know they’ll never get eaten?
  • Why do they call where the planes go in and out of an airport the ‘terminal’?
  • Why do we tell kids not to take candies from strangers yet go ‘trick or treating’ every Halloween?

OK, I’m sure you have many more you can add to this list of life’s little mysteries but this should be enough to get you thinking or at least to make you go mmm…?

And if you should have any of the answers to these questions, feel free to leave a comment.

Fun article. I suspect the spoon in the sink is from eating yogurt, & sheep don’t shrink in the rain because they don’t get put in the dryer (thank goodness).

he he thanks Margaret! Didn’t think of that.

Good, funny stuff. It does seem that a lot of “sayings” almost qualifie as oximorons. I can explain about the burnt down building. The building was “razed (as in razor) to the ground. All in good fun. Keep’em coming (:
