I would love for everyone to embrace this message. Yes We can! First of all, it’s a message of hope and there’s a lot of people who need hope. The poor need hope. The rich need hope. The black people need hope. White people need hope. Brown people need hope. Gay people need hope. Divorced people need hope. Married people need hope.

Cynics need hope. Pessimists need hope. Optimists need hope.

Second, it’s a statement of the need for community. I hope that the people who chant Yes We Can with our president elect really mean that, rather than “Yes HE can”. Barack was correct in saying that this is not his victory unless it is America’s victory. WE can. Yes, We can.

America to an extent is based upon individualism. YOU can do anything YOU want to do provided YOU work hard enough for it. If YOU work, YOU will be rewarded. This is fairness and equality. But when YOU forget the WE then we have problems. WE need to work together to make this country a better place because of all the “YOU’s” and “ME’s” who forgot one another.

Yes WE can. Can we just be we? Can we just be one indivisible nation? We are one. Some YOU’s and ME’s assign labels to WE because they are too scared to just be WE. Sometimes we are scared to call people a little different from us “WE”. It is a scary thing. But we can. Yes we can. We can fess up to the fact that “YOUs” and “MEs” have been a part of the problem, but WE will be a part of the solution. Yes We can. We can dare to recognize we as we. We are black, white, brown, rich, poor, Christian, Atheist, Jewish, young, old, conservative, and liberal.

And we can do a lot for each other…when we finally value both America and WE. Yes We Can.
