A short science fiction story about a futuristic earth. Chapter 1-The Beginning.

James jumped off the ledge lading roughly on the platform below. He could hear the shouts coming from behind him drawing closer with every step. He knew there wasn’t much time. He ran across the platform and looked down at the drop to the next one. It was at least 15 feet below him. He didn’t like his chances, but then again, he’d rather risk it than die for sure. He jumped to the lower platform, and landed with a sickening snap. He cried out in pain, clutching his right leg. It took the brunt of the damage, the bone clearly pushing against his skin. He took a deep breath and tried to crawl away, but nearly blacked out from pain. The shouts were getting closer now, he knew they’d catch him. He shook his head in dismay and looked at his watch. 3:56. 4 more minutes and he would have made it. He looked at the platform above and saw the soldiers. They were wearing the standard light blue and grey colors of the federation. They were led by a man wearing an odd combination of light blue and dark green. Despite the armed soldiers, James was actually much more afraid of this man. He was second in command to the Commander himself. His name was Gytu. Gytu held out his hand and a holographic control panel popped up. James saw him enter a series of seemingly random digits, and the platform began to lower. Gytu gave James a wicked smile.

“You almost lost us back there Wire, but you took too big of a chance. Tsk tsk, why steal the codes from us at all if you don’t plan on using them.” Gytu pulled out a pistol and pointed it at Jame’s head. “Now, if you don’t mind I want to go home. So lets make this easier on everyone. You are going to give me the data pad, or im going to kill you and take it. Your choice…Nothing? Fine, I’ll give you to the count of three. 1.”

James closed his eyes and shut out the world around him. How could everything have gone so wrong?

Two Days Earlier

It was the year 3015, and earth had come a long way. Cities had left the confines of the ground, as pollution had taken its toll. The earths surface was basically uninhabitable, save for the banished and rebels. You see, after a major turning point in 2435, a regime took over. The Federation. The original leaders were two many to count, but it slowly diminished from a fair and well governed society of leaders, to a dictatorship. Now a man known simply as the Commander is in charge. I’d love to say that he was doing a terrible job, that people were rebelling against the dictatorship, but this is not true. Under his rule things were going well. He was generally well liked and morale was up, save for a few
